Goodbye 2012, Hello 2013...

I'm not gonna lie,
this has been a tough year.

So many senseless tragedies
A second surgery and more casts for Alex
The Waldo Canyon Fire
Sleep and anxiety problems for one of my kiddos
A health scare for me
3 year old boys are CRAZY
It's getting tougher to live paycheck to paycheck
The deep sadness and grief of losing my dad

But there are so many wonderful memories of 2012!

That second surgery, casting and months of physical therapy gave my boy perfect, straight and strong feet.

3 year old boys ARE crazy, but in a good way :-)

Hearing my girl say she's glad that I stay with her when she's
scared makes my heart melt and love her even more.

My health scare resulted in nothing but realizing what
good, supportive friends I have.

My daughter and I had a fantastic adventure exploring
China and just being together.

My daughter got to travel to California and help her
hockey team win a national tournament.

Living paycheck to paycheck can be tough,
but we have everything we need.

I miss my dad so much, but knowing that he is not in pain anymore and knowing that we have a special angel always looking over us brings peace to my heart.

Bring it on 2013.

Feet and Fourth Grade...

Feet first.

Alex saw our orthopaedist last week for a routine check up and x-rays on the tootsies.

His feet are PERFECT!!!

His x-rays show that all those little bones are still where they are supposed to be.

He showed Dr S how he could walk on his heels and walk on his toes, something he could never do before. I highly recommend gymnastics as a form of physical therapy, it has done wonders for his feet, strength and balance!

To be honest, I was really nervous about the appointment because his feet still curl a lot and I was sure the dr was going to say that he needed more casting or surgery. But since the x-rays and his flexibility are excellent, we figure that having his feet curled is just habit.

The dr said we could stop the Ponseti Bar and AFO's when Alex turns 4 in March but I told her no thanks, we'll keep him in them until at least 5! No way I'm stopping now and risking a relapse :-)

On to fourth grade.

There is nothing in the parenting handbook that says this is the age that kids start becoming cruel.

Kids who Syd has been friends with since kindergarten have started making fun of her eyes, hair, being small. Kids with whom she has always gotten along with are pulling their eyes back and asking her how she can see with such small slits for eyes. Always petting her hair.

Each month, the school has a different character trait that they have to write about and October's was respect. Syd's letter talked about how those comments hurt her feelings. How her friends don't respect her or think about how their comments might make her feel.

I talked to the teacher about it a few weeks ago, I told her that racism in general needs to be addressed with the students school wide. She said she would work with the school counselors so they could come up with a plan to address the issue. Our school is very diverse and Syd is not the only student that has been on the recieving end of racist comments.

So far, nothing has been done. I'll give it a bit more time before I bring it up again.

I've always known that something like could happen but I wasn't expecting it from Syd's friends. We've always talked to her about how to handle these kinds of comments so she has told her "friends" that there is nothing wrong with her looks, "I'm Chinese!".

It's hard for her to ask them to stop because they are her friends and she doesn't want to make them mad. She knows that she needs to tell them that it hurts her feelings but it's so hard for her to be confrontational. So we just keep giving her the tools to have more confidence in herself and to know that it's ok to tell them to stop.

Now, I've known these kids for a while too and they are good kids. I know and Syd has said that they don't mean to be hurtful. They just don't realize that these kinds of comments can be hurtful.

This is the reason for a school wide "lesson" on how comments about someone's race or curly hair or glasses or braces or weight etc... can be hurtful.

And this beautiful girl is to special to be hurt.

Crazy, Busy, Fun Weekend...

Syd had Friday off so James decided to play hooky from work so we could all go to the pumpkin patch. It was a beautiful day and we had a great time!

There is also a huge corn maze that has stations to find. If you find all the stations and mark your card, you get a prize. Alex ran through the entire maze, never slowed down. Made for a good nap on the way home :-)

This morning was the Cool Science Rubik's Cube Competition.

Our kids took first place again!
These 8 kids finished 25 cubes in 10 minutes and won $500 for our school science program!

These 3rd, 4th and one 5th graders have been meeting twice a week since a couple of weeks into the school year and all of their hard work paid off! And they get to celebrate with a pizza party next week.

Syd also competed in the individual time competition with a time of 1 minute 40 seconds. Her fastest time during practice was 1 minute 18 seconds. Her goal for next year is under a minute and I think she can accomplish that!

Tonight, Syd and James are in Denver watching a hockey game with her Stallions team and tomorrow we'll be meeting some of our travel group friends from our trip this summer at the zoo. I think I'll need a vacation after this weekend!

Hunting for aspens...

We decided to explore an area different than we usually do for our annual aspen trip.

Except there were no aspens...

until we got to the same area that we go to every year.

Oh well, it was a good day for a drive and there was minimal complaining from the back seat, especially after we found a playground to stop at.

There were a few photo opportunities but by the time we got to them, the kids were done!

Racism in the 4th Grade...

www.googleimage.com
Syd's elementary school is very diverse compared to the rest of the elementary schools in our district. Most of the schools have primarily white students on our end of town, so the fact that our neighborhood school is one of the oldest and most diverse is great.

Since it is so diverse, it surprised me when Syd came home a couple of weeks ago and told me what she overheard a new classmate saying.

This new kid was telling someone that he wished T and T would go back to where they belong. One T is black and the other is mixed.

Syd went to the teacher and told her what she had overheard, which resulted in talking to the counselor and principal.  She was really nervous about talking to the principal but I told her that everyone is nervous about that :-)

We are so very proud of Syd for making the right decision in telling a teacher.

Telling on a classmate can be a tough thing to do but she knew that what she had overheard was wrong.

We have always taught her that every single person is the same, we just look different on the outside. We know that some day, as hard as it will be, someone will make a comment about our daughter's beautiful eyes or tease her because she is so tiny or pet her head because they love her silky Asian hair (she has classmates that have done that for years). We talk about stereotypes and racism because  it's present each and every day in the news, in her classroom and every place in between.

Talking about it is what made her do the right thing.  Many conversations we have are not easy but we are giving her the tools to be able to handle situations like this one. It makes me sad that 8 and 9 year old kids have to deal with racism at all but at least I know that my 9 year old is strong enough to make the right decisions on how to deal with these issues.

Alex graduated...

From physical therapy that is.

We've gone from these adorable
curly feet...

To these beautiful, straight and strong tootsies!

Of course, this long road has not ended yet.  He has to wear his AFO's M-W-F and the Ponseti brace at night.  His exercises are essentially just playing hard, no problem there!  He's also in a gymnastics class that has been fantastic for building his strength and balance, when he's not in a time out for pushing other kids off the balance beam.

We'll see his dr in a couple of months and his physical therapist in March so we just maintain, maintain, maintain!  I'd like to never see another cast on his legs again!
